In this episode he talks about the education system, how we will work in the future, and lessons he has learned from podcasting.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/3718254\/height\/360\/width\/640\/theme\/standard\/direction\/no\/autoplay\/no\/autonext\/no\/thumbnail\/yes\/preload\/no\/no_addthis\/no\/\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" scrolling=\"no\"  allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/your-life-on-purpose\/id1001400926?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\">Your Life on Purpose<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; a micro focus podcast on school\/passion\/purpose<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thetravelingcup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Traveling Cup<\/a> is an extension of school<\/li>\n<li>met former student who went to a prestigious university\n<ul>\n<li>told him &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what the real world is.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>so he started interviewing people to see what the real world was<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>went to business conferences and interviewed the influencers that went to them<\/li>\n<li>what can they teach us\n<ul>\n<li>how do we connect the dots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>first podcast was <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/transforming-education-podcast\/id669629669?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\">Transforming Education<\/a><\/li>\n<li>learned that done was better than perfect<\/li>\n<li>is more of a doer than a planner<\/li>\n<li>made every beginner mistake<\/li>\n<li>he learned by doing<\/li>\n<li>started The Traveling Cup\u00a0around same time he met his former student\n<ul>\n<li>saw twice the return from The Traveling Cup than his first podcast<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 the amount of work, twice the results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>still teaches (12th grade), likes to teach life skills<\/li>\n<li>school found out what he was doing within 6 months\n<ul>\n<li>they loved it, and he became the go to guy for social media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Follow your heart and do something. If you&#8217;re doing good work, you&#8217;re going to be rewarded for it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>still gets lack for social media\n<ul>\n<li>had a tweet go out at the same time he was supposed to be at a meeting<\/li>\n<li>had to explain how <a href=\"https:\/\/hootsuite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">HootSuite<\/a> and scheduling tweets works<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Change is scary. I love change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The way I stay creative if I feel like I&#8217;m in a loll\u00a0of creativity is I need to have some element of change.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>large systems resist change<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1eTId8X\" target=\"_blank\">Switch<\/a> by Chip and Dan Heath on why change is so hard<\/li>\n<li>uses his podcast to get message out to the world and connect with people<\/li>\n<li>wants to create course that helps people do what they love<\/li>\n<li>people don&#8217;t know what to do out of high school because they are never asked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The system design itself is not really set up to allow students to really explore what they love.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>school system is based on an industrial model\n<ul>\n<li>was built to get students used to factory setting<\/li>\n<li>truancy officers told people to send their kids to school<\/li>\n<li>this system doesn&#8217;t let you explore what you love<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Students who are given a \u00a0choice are more confident in who they are and what they want to do.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>to find your purpose, you need to give students the opportunity to fail<\/li>\n<li>Genius Hour &#8211; based on Google&#8217;s 20%\n<ul>\n<li>students have one class period a week to work on their own projects<\/li>\n<li>allows them to fine tune projects<\/li>\n<li>they quickly find what they can do<\/li>\n<li>teachers can&#8217;t grade on failure of projects<\/li>\n<li>most students fail, but they reflect on failures<\/li>\n<li>failing forward is what&#8217;s important<\/li>\n<li>learned a lot from failure and reflected on it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marioarmstrong.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Armstrong<\/a> using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.periscope.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">Periscope<\/a> to build audience for his talk show<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Life&#8217;s not a multiple choice test.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you&#8217;re forced to create answers yourself, it&#8217;s far more difficult when you spend so many years looking for the correct answer and we don&#8217;t know what the correct answer is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t solve the problems of tomorrow with the tools you use today.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>two 10th graders reach out to Harvard\n<ul>\n<li>re-created ancient trade maps using Google Earth<\/li>\n<li>you can go to site and see what location look like today<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>girl student started cup cakery blog<\/li>\n<li>students taught him to be humble\n<ul>\n<li>as a teacher you are supposed to have the answers, but students often teach you lessons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>favorite thing about teaching is getting students talking<\/li>\n<li>students want to see people connect on a more personal level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;My biggest takeaway is they inspire me to do more with my life and they inspire me to have a social purpose angle to everything I do in my life.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>this generation coming up wants to see change, shifts in how we do life<\/li>\n<li>future of work will be made of entrepreneurs and freelancers\n<ul>\n<li>kids will have lifestyle businesses<\/li>\n<li>work revolves around life not clocking in and out of a 9-5 job<\/li>\n<li>with freedom comes happiness<\/li>\n<li>apathy comes from the system design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The world we&#8217;re living in now is a new type of\u00a0Renaissance.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Gutenberg\" target=\"_blank\">Gutenberg<\/a> &amp; Cause once I find out who I am, then I&#8217;m able to grow. Then I&#8217;m able to challenge myself and try new things.
